Chess Opening Book
Last updated: 20 September 2026
Chess Opening Book collects no personal data. The app has no accounts, no analytics, no advertising and no third-party tracking. Nothing you do in it is sent anywhere, because it has nowhere to send it: the app makes no network requests of its own.
What the app stores, and where
Everything the app remembers is written to the device's own storage, inside the app, and it is readable only by the app. None of it leaves the device unless you export it yourself. That is:
- Which openings you have trained, how often, and when they are next due for review.
- The two openings you pinned to the home screen.
- Your settings: language, appearance, and whether review reminders are on.
- A random identifier generated on first use. It is not linked to you, your device, your Apple ID or anything else, and it is never transmitted. It exists so that a backup you export can say which device it came from.
- Whether a subscription is currently active on this device.
Deleting the app deletes all of it. There is no copy anywhere else.
Backups you make yourself
Settings has a Backup option that copies your progress out as plain text. That text goes wherever you paste it — a note, an email to yourself, a message. The app does not upload it, and nobody receives it unless you send it to them. Pasting a backup back in merges it into what is already on the device.
Subscriptions
The Black repertoire is sold as a monthly subscription through Apple's In-App Purchase. The purchase is handled entirely by Apple: payment details, your Apple ID and your billing history are never seen by this app or by its developer. The app asks Apple only whether a subscription is currently active, and stores that yes-or-no answer on the device.
Apple's own handling of that transaction is covered by Apple's Privacy Policy. Subscriptions are managed and cancelled in your Apple ID settings, not in the app.
Notifications
If you turn on review reminders, the app schedules them locally on the device through iOS. No notification is sent from a server, and no notification token is collected or shared.
Children
The app is suitable for all ages and collects nothing from anyone, children included. It contains no user-generated content, no messaging and no links out to social platforms.
Changes to this policy
If the app ever starts collecting something — it does not today — this page will say so before that version is released, and the date at the top will change.
